When you’re painting or wallpapering the walls, selecting new blinds and upholstery, and choosing the colour of your carpet or floor, having a colour scheme will help you to create a beautiful and pleasing final effect. This isn’t just to make your home look beautiful; it also impacts your mood and how you feel as you spend time in a space.

Ultimately, your interior colour scheme should be a way to express your personality and tastes! So read our tips below and decide how you want your home to look.

5 Colour Scheme Tips

1. Pick a Colour From Your Pattern

If you’re redecorating a room that already has patterned furnishings, such as rugs or upholstery, then choose your colour scheme based off the biggest pattern in the room.

If you have a large, patterned rug that you want to keep, then select your colour palette from the colours in that pattern. It can be a good idea to pick the more neutral colours that are in the rug — such as the whites or beige colours — for the largest walls, but there’s no need to be restricted to this!

You can then choose the material and pattern for your blinds, wallpaper and other upholstery based around this colour.

A lot of paint suppliers can mix paint specific to your requirements. If you bring in a sample of the colour, they can scan it and make a paint that matches it perfectly!

2. Neutral Tones

You can’t go wrong with a range of neutral greys. They have the great quality of being able to look warm or cool, depending on what you mix them with. A fantastic way to pick a colour scheme is to pair cool and warm. Perhaps choose cool greys and combine them with a warm, honey yellow, for example.

Greys compliment almost every other colour, from pastels to bold patterns. Combining a cool grey wall and carpet colour with a bright coloured blind can look fantastic!

3. Natural Gradient

The best way to decorate a room is to mimic the way it’s done in nature. This creates a look that’s extremely aesthetically pleasing and hard to get wrong. Your floor should be the darkest colour, the walls a medium colour value and the ceiling the lightest.

This mimics the way the world looks around us. The earth is the darkest value, then the middle ground, like the trees and buildings, and then the sky is the lightest.

This isn’t necessarily a hard, fast rule, but it can simplify the decorating process and makes it easier to get the look right.

4. Think About The Whole House

If you’re decorating your whole house, it can be a nice idea to choose colour schemes for each room that compliment each other. It helps your home to feel like a whole.

If you’re doing this, it can be a good idea to choose a colour scheme for the areas of your home that are more formal first — the spaces that you share with guests.

Namely, you could start by choosing a colour scheme for your living room and dining room. From there, adapt the colour to work for the feel of different spaces.

You might want your entryway to be more neutral and light, so you could use the neutral tones from your palette and combine them with a less saturated version of your primary colour.

Your office, on the other hand, could be a more intimate and cosy space. Take your primary colour and choose a slightly darker or richer version. For example, if you’ve chosen red, then you could have burgundy colours in your office space.

5. Ratio Rule

A fantastic way to decorate a space is to follow a ratio of 60-30-10. This means choosing a dominant colour to cover 60% of the space, the walls for example, a secondary colour for 30%, such as the blinds and upholstery, and an accent colour (or a couple) for 10% of the space, such as accessories like cushions, a vase or a throw.

To choose what colours will work in this scheme, use a colour wheel. Colours next to each other on the colour wheel create a calming and pleasing effect. Colours that are opposite will pop out from each other.

In this example, white is the dominant colour, orange the secondary and blue the accent colour.
